What a real 30-60-90 looks like for a new AE

Most 30-60-90 plans are generic onboarding theater. Here's one built around actual quota attainment.

Most 30-60-90 day plans read the same regardless of company: “get to know the product,” “shadow calls,” “start prospecting,” “close first deal.” They’re templates, not plans, and new reps can tell the difference immediately.

A real 30-60-90 is built backward from the number the rep is actually accountable for, and it names the specific behaviors that get them there, not generic milestones.

Days 1–30: prove they can talk about the problem, not the product. By day 30, a new AE should be able to run a discovery call cold and correctly diagnose which of your three or four core problems a prospect actually has, without leaning on a deck. If they can’t do this, sending them into live deals just burns pipeline.

Days 31–60: prove they can move a deal without you. This is where most plans get vague. The concrete bar is: can they take a deal from discovery to a clear next step without a manager jumping on the call to rescue it? If yes, they’re ready for volume. If no, that’s still a coaching problem, not a lead-quality problem.

Days 61–90: prove the number. Not “on track”: an actual closed deal, or a pipeline built with enough real, qualified opportunities that the math for next quarter works without hope. If a new AE hits day 90 with only “great conversations” to show for it, the plan failed, regardless of how it felt.

The version of this that actually works is specific to your sales cycle length and your ICP. A 90-day plan for a 45-day sales cycle looks nothing like one for a 6-month enterprise cycle. Building the real version, tied to your actual pipeline math, is part of what I set up whenever a team brings me in to make their first few sales hires stick.

FAQ
What should a new AE be able to do by day 30?

Run a cold discovery call and correctly diagnose which core problem a prospect actually has, without leaning on a slide deck.

What's the concrete bar for day 60?

Moving a deal from discovery to a clear next step without a manager rescuing the call. That's the signal they're ready for real volume.

What if a new AE has "great conversations" but no closed deals by day 90?

That's a failed 90 days, not a success in progress. Activity without a real result means the plan needs to change, not more patience.
